Trends Emerge in 2013 Community Manager Report

Community ManagerAs part of the Community Manager Appreciation Day celebration, Social Fresh released its annual Community Manager Report, an infographic and white paper that compiles results of a survey distributed to community and social media managers.

And now that the survey and report is in its third year, the data has revealed several emerging trends—all of which, Social Fresh says, “look like good news for social media professionals.” With tools and technology evolving on such a rapid scale, it only makes sense that positions that are so closely intertwined with the digital landscape continue to evolve, too—and we expect to see continued growth not just in terms of the community manager position, but across digital marketing as a whole.

Here are a few stats included in the infographic that we found the most compelling:

  • One in 5 community managers work for an agency; the rest are found on the brand side.
  • Women continue to hold the majority of CM positions at 61%. The men, however, are gaining ground, up 39% from 32% in 2010.
  • The three cities with the most CMs per capita include Boston, Washington, D.C. and Cincinnati.
  • CMs overwhelmingly find the most success on Facebook—54%, to be exact. Twitter comes in second at 20%, followed by LinkedIn at 8%. Those findings make perfect sense because, today at least, Facebook is the primary space for community management. It also makes sense that LinkedIn isn’t a major focus in the community management space because not much true community management, other than managing a brand’s corporate LinkedIn page by posting status updates and participating as an individual in a group, is possible on LinkedIn.

Another interesting find? Community managers (and, heck, anyone who works in social media marketing, for that matter) tend to be stereotyped as young professionals in their early to mid-20s (for better or worse). SocialFresh’s data, however, points to an increasing average age, from 29 in 2011, to 30 in 2012, to 32 in 2013.

    I’m thrilled to see the average age of community managers changing. So many employers still seem to think there’s some magical connection between extreme youth and social media marketing success. Not true at all.

    Awesome data here. Actually interesting that LinkedIn is outperforming Google+. And it’s great that companies are trying to staff an internal CM team as opposed to hiring an outside agency
