Social Media: Why Your Business Needs It

Social Media
I did a presentation last week for one of our clients, with a goal of broadly covering social media and why it’s an important element of business and marketing strategy today.

I never tire of talking with businesses – large or small – about the evolution of the world of marketing and how the Internet and the various ways we use it impacts the lives of virtually everyone (and every business) today. And I don’t know about you, but I think it’s nothing short of fascinating. Yes, I know that makes me a certifiable geek, but fascinating is, most definitely, what it is. There’s just no other word that applies more.

And the more I know, the more I learn, the more we use the online space to not only grow and develop our own business, but also to help our clients do the same, the more awestruck my team and I are by the power of online marketing and communications.

This SlideShare presentation gives a broad overview of social media, how companies are using it and for what. This particular client is in the B2B space, so some of the content is focused on the differences between B2B and B2C in the social media space.

Some random facts:

  • 86% of B2B Companies are using social media
  • But only 32% of them engage daily
  • 46% of B2B companies perceive social media as irrelevant to them and their industry
  • 60% of B2B companies have no staff dedicated to social media

  • 43% of US Companies are projected to put an emphasis on blogging in 2012, up from 34% in 2009. (eMarketer)
  • Company blog leads all social media channels for acquiring leads.*
  • 34% of US companies use blogging for marketing purposes.*
  • For companies that DO blog, there’s a 67% increase in sales for companies that blog over companies that don’t blog.*

  • 77% of Global Fortune 100 Companies have a Twitter account

  • More than 80% of companies use social media for recruiting.
  • 95% are using LinkedIn

There’s more. Much more. But I won’t spoil it for you – I’ll let you check out the presentation yourself. And I’d love to know what you think. What are you seeing with your business or your clients? Anyone using social mediums in innovative ways or have experiences that are worth sharing? If so, do tell – because we always want to know.

Social media why it matters to business today

And a special thanks here to my presentation guru, my friend and frequent collaborator, Al Bonner. In addition to regularly working with me and the V3 team on mobile technology and a myriad of other things, Al owns a business called Presentation Transformations. He’s a veritable wizard at taking your thoughts and ideas (and sometimes even your lame start on a PowerPoint presentation), whipping them into shape and helping you create the most killer presentations ever. Every great presentation I’ve ever given, I owe to Al.

Whether you’re working in PowerPoint, Keynote, or something else, the things Al brings to the table are really amazing. And you should be checking him out. And hiring him to help you.
