Proud To Be A New Dork

Girly Nerds Rule

Okay, so I discovered this video this morning while hanging out with my friends Alli Worthington and Sarah Caminker in our posh room at the Fiesta de la Quinta in Austin. We’re at SXSW, the veritable mecca of the tech world (or at least one of them) and so, it was especially timely to stumble upon this video. As I watched, I found myself smiling and nodding – you’ll know just what I mean when you watch it yourself. When I heard the words “Science is the new art,” I realized that truer words were never spoken. Science IS the new art and it’s a pretty amazing one. Surrounded these last few days in Austin by people with massively big brains and equally massive hearts makes me want to pinch myself to make sure I’m not living a dream. I’m a geeky girl and have been since my earliest days. I love words, thoughts, learning and information. And so, when I get to spend my career being surrounded by and collaborating with others who are equally as jazzed by the things that I love is really the stuff of dreams. Or maybe just the stuff of a pretty flipping incredible life.

Watch the video, whether you’re a dork or not, and I think you’ll enjoy it. And, if you are a dork, nerd or geek (or maybe a combination of all three, like me), I think you’ll see why I enjoyed it so much.

Great video! – Thanks for sharing. Sounds like you have some awesome digs there at SXSW ;) Of course who cares you won't be spending much time in the room. Planning to be there next year for sure!

That is a great video – You're right! I still don't know what V.C. is – saw that the other day too… hard to Google that! :)

    Shelly,
As a hard-core programmer for over 35 years, may I say that it's great to see so many new, interesting people coming into the tech sphere. What a wonderful experience it was to go to my first social media events 3 years ago and see something I had never experienced at conferences to that point… women! And suddenly there were marketing and PR and design people, too. It was amazing.. they smiled, they laughed, they said hello and made you feel welcome.
It's meant really a whole new phase of my life and career. The rest of the world finally caught up to us, right? :)

Ditto. You nailed it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about life and your surroundings, Shelly. Awesome video, too.

It's lovely, isn't it, Joe? I get it. Completely. And am thankful for the serendipitous convergence of events that brought us all together.

Thanks Krys! I know you know just what I mean :)

Nice video. Nice post. I've been a “techno-geek turned marketer” for some time now. Sarah speaks highly of you. Pleasure meeting you.

  • ShellyKramer

Thanks Alex. It was terrific meeting you as well! Geeks rule :)

So if you've been a dork the whole time, is this the advent of a dorkdom turf war?

As more and more people become aware of this kind of thing, i just hope it doesn't get as segmented as everything else that becomes more and more known – the whole point of dorkdom, nerdery and geekishness is that there is a wide variety, and I think classifying them would hurt rather than help.

It's meant to be, Shelly, that we connected. I posted this video on my blog a couple weeks ago. New dorks unite! ;)

Y'know, I've read so many recaps and reflections on SXSW since returning from Austin. I'm thrilled that you, too, met “people with massively big brains and equally massive hearts.” I experienced the same thing and am *still* processing it all. Sounds like you had a really rich experience. Really glad we've connected. :)

I'm a complete and epic dork. And I love that he ripped on Martha :) I remember the day I told my mother that I worked in a weird blend of technology and creativity. She just shook her head since I'm the one who used to feed cheese to my mouse. Props to the New Dorks!
